"The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and
your father's household and go to the land I will show you. "I will make
you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name
great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you,
and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be
blessed through you." Genesis 12:1-3
There were many people in the 1800s trying to make sense out of the
greatness of Britain. Many theories began to percolate.
One such theory was written by Charles Darwin and became famous. His
theory was that the strongest of the species survive and since white man
was so successful around the world the white man was believed by many to
be the most advanced race. It was a theory that led to communism, Nazism
and quite a bit of justified Racism.
Another theory based on race was British Isrealism. This theory
didn’t take it that the white man or Britain in particular was blessed
because of some unknown advancement in their race but because God
blessed Abraham with the verses above and that this blessing was passed
on down to Isaac, Jacob and Ephraim and Manasseh. This theory assumes
that through this prodigy the world would be blessed and ultimately this
is why Britain and the US became great.
It is easy to understand why they would think this as the promise is
often repeated in our English Bibles as, "I will establish my
covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your
descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and
the God of your descendants after you."Genesis 17:7
This verse is correctly stated in the King James Version as the word
seed, not seeds, and not descendents. Many of the other versions of the
Bible will include footnotes that say the term descendents is actually
singular in the original writings.
Upon reading this at first glance it is easy to assume that the
promise that the world was to be blessed through these people. To some
degree this is true. But we also know from history that the nation that
was later called after these promises, Israel, was destroyed and most of
the people were dispersed, scattered like seeds in the wind – amongst
the nations. So with these facts in mind a trip throughout history to
determine where these people may be was conducted with the result being
Britain and to a lesser extent America. Of course they had that end in
mind before they began the research and only looked to find things that
agreed with this position and did it based on fables and the like and
not the Word of God. I personally do not want to argue the accuracy of
the historical research but to demonstrate that the rationale that began
this theory was simply explaining the greatness of Britain. It wasn’t a
revelation from God but a look into the Word of God and history to
explain the cause. It assumes a family blessing, it assumes the people
stayed together in clans, it assumes that they weren’t diluted
(scattered) all over the world, it assumes Isrealites were all white (2
moms were slaves), it assumes that the blessings specific to the land
had a double meaning in the world today (yesterday?). It assumes all
that even though the blessings were very specific about the land they
were to be blessed in.
I think Paul clearly destroyed the very first assumption in Galatians
chapter 3:16 "The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed.
The Scripture does not say "and to seeds," (again most English
translations use descendents not and to his descendent) meaning many
people, but "and to your seed," meaning one person, who is Christ.
You may have wondered in the past what the significance of this was
but glanced over it or heard many confusing answers to justify whatever
a church wishes to teach. The significance is obvious when we go back
and look to the places in scripture that Paul was referring to – the
promises to Abraham. The same ones we have previously looked at.
Genesis 22:18 "In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be
blessed," Paul demonstrating that the real blessing or birthrite is for
the Christ that was to come from his seed and this Christ was to be a
blessing to the nations.
Therefore the original assumption of this argument that his heritage
has a birthrite is faulty to Christians. The assumption that finding the
people God would bless in the world becomes a faulty premise in linage
because the ultimate promise was meant to be fulfilled in Christ and
through His seed and not in ALL the literal descendents of Abraham.
