Genesis 7
                              By John Coish

7:1 Then the LORD said to Noah, "Come into the ark, you and all your household, because I have seen that you are righteous before Me in this generation. 2 "You shall take with you seven each of every clean animal, a male and his female; two each of animals that are unclean, a male and his female;3 "also seven each of birds of the air, male and female, to keep the species alive on the face of all the earth.

The time has come to enter the ark. How does Noah gather all the animal kinds? Does God bring them to him? Does his family go and trap them? Over many years it would be easy to obtain one from each kind except that we view the earth in its current configuration and think how did he get a Kangaroo or a kind specific to South America? He didn’t have airlines to fly him around to get what he needed so travel was labouriously slow. On the other hand, the separation of the continents into the world we see today didn’t take place yet. God would have provided the opportunity for him to gather the animals.

There are several other items to note here though. Noah knew what was clean or unclean to eat prior to this point. Many assume it was after the flood that man began to eat animals but this reference clearly points to clean and unclean prior to the flood despite the many books that portray only two of each animal. God’s Word states clearly 7 clean and 2 unclean of each kind.

The reason why Noah was to take these animals in the ark was to keep the species alive. It wasn’t like the species was alive where Noah couldn’t see (another continent maybe). Some use this claim to say that it was only the local indigenous species that were put in the ark. No biblical reason to do so except that life elsewhere on the planet becomes biblically acceptable to them. This is not an idea you would come to from the Bible itself.

Another point to note is that even though God could easily create again, He chose not to. He chose to leave his original creation account to be the only physical one. Rather then wiping out the past and then starting again with just an account of Noah. This way Eve remains the mother of all living. No mankind prior to Adam and Eve is a problem for local flood theorists because of their interpretation of the fossil record. They then have to say older remains of mankind were quasi man not the same as mankind after Adam, even though the fossil record doesn’t agree with this viewpoint. It is like God had to work at it to get it right. Instead of this recreation theme God demonstrates a different approach in the flood. His creation was good from the beginning. Man corrupted it and He was going to wipe away the corruption and allow His good creation to again be fruitful upon the earth but with a shorter limit to man’s life – probably to let him know how much he needs a Saviour.

4 "For after seven more days I will cause it to rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and I will destroy from the face of the earth all living things that I have made."

A repeating theme to let the reader understand that God intended to wipe out all life not on the ark.

5 And Noah did according to all that the LORD commanded him.6 Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters were on the earth.7 So Noah, with his sons, his wife, and his sons' wives, went into the ark because of the waters of the flood.8 Of clean animals, of animals that are unclean, of birds, and of everything that creeps on the earth,9 two by two they went into the ark to Noah, male and female, as God had commanded Noah.10 And it came to pass after seven days that the waters of the flood were on the earth.

The ark was loaded and for this seven day period there was probably a lot of anxiety and scoffing from outsiders at Noah loading a boat at dry dock. Yet he did what the Lord commanded. Many species would have died out during the flood. A small pair of elephants could have caused the kind to continue even though Mammoths would have become extinct. Likewise two tigers were brought on that give us the tiger varieties we have today but saber-toothed tigers became extinct. Extinction of various families within kinds occurs on a regular basis still today but occurred abruptly across many kinds during the flood. Depending on the gene makeup of the pairs that entered the ark, limitations of the varieties afterwards would occur. God Himself could have decided to limit some species by encouraging limiting pairs in the ark (ie Kamono Dragons and other lizards limited from replacing larger lizards often referred to as dinosaurs).

11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

Where did the water come from for the flood? Many limit the flood to a local (still large but local) flood because were did the water come from? God said it came from the great deep and from the sky. Some say that was just comments based on pagan cosmology but I don’t think God cares about pagan cosmology so lets assume for an instant that God meant what He said. We don’t know of any huge bodies of water below the crust of the earth today so from our scientific research where could the water come from?

The following page is a picture of the Earth that is rarely seen. We usually observe the Earth’s surface and just show the water surface but this map demonstrates the surface of the Earth’s crust even below the seas.

Please note the ridges that push up from within the seas (the fountains of the deep). Some say these ridges are caused by the continents moving. When you pull things apart you do get rips but not cracks that run perpendicular to the seem. You get cracks perpendicular to the seem when you push up from below. However, today we don’t see a great effort in pushing up from below these areas. Nor do we see the continents moving more then an inch or two a year but in the past we know there was a mountain building period. We know there was a great earthquake period. What caused this sudden movement of the Earth’s crust. The braking open of the great fountains of the deep is as good a scientific theory as any based purely on science. From a biblical historical account it is the great catastrophe of nature during mankind’s history.

Water is a fascinating substance. It is a necessary requirement for life. It is only present on Earth and as comets and the odd meteorite in our solar system. When it is frozen it takes up more space then when a liquid. Cooler molecules fall until it is below 4 degrees centigrade then they float which causes ice to form on top first. When a water molecule is heated and turns to a gas; one water molecule becomes a thousand steam molecules. This incredible rate of expansion causes so much energy that it can be harnessed in a steam engine to pull tons of merchandise through the Rocky Mountains. If God had stored a layer of water under the crust of the earth and then allowed it to blow out by ripping the sea ridges then the continents would move quickly and form mountains, the continents crashing together could cause greater volcanic activity and even blasted water way up high.

Someone asked how that would cause Noah to know waters of the deep came forth. He wasn’t near the Atlantic Ocean ridge. Examine the map a little further and you will see the ridge that come from the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean through Noah’s neighbourhood. Furthermore the tsunami that would result from this would make any tsunami we have documented look like a ripple in a pond in comparison.

More difficult for any science to prove is the claims of Mammoths instantly frozen and rivers frozen from top to bottom so swiftly that fish are frozen in midstream instead of at the bottom because rivers normally freeze from top to bottom so if fish run out of water they are frozen at the bottom not in the upper layers. Science has no credible theory for this or for an ice age to the middle of the U.S. Perhaps all these events are concurrent during the catastrophe God identifies as His flood.

Likewise the waters from the heavens fall. It appears all the moisture from the skies and possibly space through the ripping apart of the Atlantic ridge. Since God separated the waters from the Earth from the atmosphere some claim there was also a ring of water around the Earth. Difficult based on what we see today to picture how this could have occurred. We know that man must have been able to see the sun, moon and stars prior to the flood so whatever was there would have had to have been transparent. On the other hand, we would be foolish to think the atmosphere didn’t change after the flood because the rainbow is given to us as a sign. So the atmosphere must have changed too.

12 And the rain was on the earth forty days and forty nights.13 On the very same day Noah and Noah's sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and Noah's wife and the three wives of his sons with them, entered the ark; 14 they and every beast after its kind, all cattle after their kind, every creeping thing that creeps on the earth after its kind, and every bird after its kind, every bird of every sort.15 And they went into the ark to Noah, two by two, of all flesh in which is the breath of life.16 So those that entered, male and female of all flesh, went in as God had commanded him; and the LORD shut him in.

Again God repeats all those that have the breath of life to emphasize the completeness of this action. Then God shuts or protects Him in this ark.

17 Now the flood was on the earth forty days. The waters increased and lifted up the ark, and it rose high above the earth.18 The waters prevailed and greatly increased on the earth, and the ark moved about on the surface of the waters.19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly on the earth, and all the high hills under the whole heaven were covered.20 The waters prevailed fifteen cubits upward, and the mountains were covered.21 And all flesh died that moved on the earth: birds and cattle and beasts and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, and every man.22 All in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, all that was on the dry land, died.23 So He destroyed all living things which were on the face of the ground: both man and cattle, creeping thing and bird of the air. They were destroyed from the earth. Only Noah and those who were with him in the ark remained alive.24 And the waters prevailed on the earth one hundred and fifty days.

The rain poured down for forty days and the waters rose until the flood was lifted up and then it continued going up until all the mountains were covered. The waters appearing to raise up for a total of one hundred and fifty days. During that time period as the continents move and the younger mountains are broken up they probably break through the waters but not until after they were flooded and ALL animals and birds died. Fish did not need to be housed in the ark – only animals that breathe air were destroyed. Again God emphasizes ALL animals died apart from the ark. A local flood that raises the water thousands of feet in the middle East and yet does not flood Australia or Americas would be miraculous indeed, something God could have done but nothing in the scripture describes this it would be an idea one reads into the scripture. It would be an idea that opposes the emphasis God places on all flesh ending except those in the ark.

This flood was supposed to be so spectacular that you would have to willfully reject it. In order to do so you would have to say some other catastrophes caused all the major changes in Earth, some guess at asteroids. In order to do so you would have to ignore the common historical origins of people that claim a great flood destroyed the Earth. You would have to reject the Word of God’s description of a Flood.

2 Peter 3:1 Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder),2 that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior,3 knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts,4 and saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation."

5 For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water,6 by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water.7 But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

The reason they willfully forget is they believe that God will not judge them. Some are more fearful of man’s ridicule than God’s judgment. Some believe that God would be wrong to judge homosexuality and sexual immorality so they reject Him and His Word and believe they, mankind, can make the Earth a Garden of Eden.

They may forget but God does not change. Either seek His will as His disciple, a student of the Word of God, or you too will perish?

The truth isn’t so hard to find that someone needs to go to God to talk with Him to tell you. It isn’t so difficult that you shouldn’t read it but it is very near you. It is in the Word of God, the Bible. All you need is to believe in the commandments of God and the testimony of Jesus, His son and you can be saved from the wrath of fire. There is no other way to Him and to His Garden of Eden.
